Yesterday’s Prayer for our Nation
Prayer for our Nation – Proverbs 14:34
Father of all Creation, we honor and exalt your name and recognize your controlling power over all of us. You gave us life, you gave us all physical blessings, and you gave us hope of eternal life through your Son who paid our debt and reconciled us to you. Father, we can never thank you enough for all you do every day of our lives.
Father, your Word tells us that “righteousness exalts a nation”. That simply means that doing your will is the right thing for any nation. It means that pleasing you is the right way to make choices, decisions, and policy. Father, help us to be a nation that is right in your eyes. We ask for your help to be humble servants and not self-righteous citizens of a country we love, but a country we only temporarily are residents of. Our citizenship is in heaven, the eternal country you have prepared and promised us. But, Father, until that reunion happens, help us be that salt of the earth your Son called on us to be! Help us be the light of the world that you want your children to be.
Father, we want our nation to be drawn to you, to seek you, to show that our laws should be an extension of your laws. We ask for your guidance as we struggle through difficult times. But Father, we know that righteousness must start with each of us, so help us to be the example of what our whole nation could be.
Father, your word also tells us that “sin is a disgrace to any people”. So, forgive us as a nation for not always caring about being right and honoring you. Forgive us for sometimes letting hate replace love. Forgive us for actions, decisions, and changes that should be a disgrace but aren’t. Forgive us for not being the example you called us to be.
Father, help us to feel your presence. Help us to sense your displeasure. Help us to seek your will as individuals and as a nation. Your way is always the best. There is nothing more important than to do like the wise King said long ago, “Fear God and keep his commandment, for this this is the whole duty of man.”
Thank you for hearing us. Thank you for your patience and love. Thank you for allowing us to own the hope of our salvation and not wish for it.
In the name of your precious Son and our only Lord and Savior, we offer this petition for our nation and ourselves.
Amen.
